A good summary, however I would highlight a self-reseach point that doesn't need to go on your checklist but should be discussed with every elected officials seeking re-election: you need to to constantly review (and document) your constituent service. Worst case I remember was in 1994, when we found that Jeff Bingaman's brain trust had no idea of just what his staff did for tens of thousands of New Mexicans because for nearly eight years, his highly effective field staff wasn't required to update anyone connected with the campaign—worse, the filing system they were using was a relic. To their credit, Bingaman's staff got themselves up to speed in record time and they documented his service to the media and public. 1994 was a rough year for Democrats in New Mexico but Jeff beat a well-funded candidate by 7 points.

Thanks for writing this, Will. I could go on for days about the problems our party has with research. At the top of the list is that people don't understand what it is for. This should be required reading.
